Job Description:

This position is responsible for the maintenance and assist with the operation of Southwest Arena when the Arena is being operated as an ice arena (approximately August - March) and will assist with all other parks owned by the Fargo Park District during all seasons of the year. This position will be engaged in construction, repair or maintenance of all arenas, city parks and facilities. This position will work with irrigation systems, Zambonis, apply chemicals related to park maintenance, operate a variety of equipment related to park maintenance and assist with training and supervision of part-time seasonal staff. This position is responsible for the beautification, maintenance and construction of city parks, facilities and arenas. This position will work closely with all other departments within the Park District.


Essential Functions

Evaluation of this position is based primarily on performance of the following essential functions, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Winter Arena duties (approximately August through March) shall include:
    • operation of indoor ice arenas, shifts include evening and weekends on a rotating basis.
    • Supervise arena special events including but not limited to hockey games, tournaments, public skating, dry floor rentals, and activities.
    • Maintain arena ice by operating Zamboni and ice edger; perform general maintenance of ice surface and hockey boards.
    • Assist and supervise maintenance including ice maintenance and grooming, structures, equipment, ice resurfacer, compressors, etc.
    • Assume some managerial duties such as scheduling building assignments to user groups, conflict resolution and increased customer service when the rink manager is not available or scheduled.
    • Coordinate, supervise and assign work to shift leader and part-time arena staff.
    • Summer duties shall include:
      • Construction and maintenance of city parks, open spaces, facilities and recreational areas. Also includes all functions included in the Park Maintenance job description.
      • Perform other duties as presented by the Park Supervisors or the Arena Managers.

Evaluation of this position may also be based on occasional performance of the following other functions, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.
  • Respond to comments from the public and provide information regarding park cleanliness and related park maintenance items.

Experience and Skills:

Education/Experience - Accepted education and experience are as follows:

  • Two-year degree from an accredited institution in facility and grounds maintenance.
  • Related degree with one to two years of experience in a maintenance related field.
  • No college degree; required minimum of three years of experience in facility and grounds maintenance.

Credentials/Licenses/Certifications - Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must have or the ability to obtain within six months of hire, a North Dakota Pesticide Applicators license and a Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement.
